How to Make an Area Rug Stay in Place on a Carpeted Floor
67Rubber rug mats...say that three times fast! Area rugs can slip and slide on any surface including carpeted and solid surface floors. It may seem unusual to put an area rug on top of wall to wall carpeting, but some people do this to protect the flooring in high traffic areas or if they rent their home. It is easier and less expensive to replace an area rug that is stained then to replace all the carpeting. It is also easier to clean an area rug then carpeting if the need arises. The best way to keep them from slipping is to purchase a rug mat or pad, either pre-cut or cut it yourself to the shape and length of the offending rug. A rug mat or pad is either a textured rubber material that "sticks" to surfaces without harming them or a felted like rubber material that "clings" to surfaces without harming them. They are usually cream or gray colored.

My new Nourison Rhytms Collection area rug,92"X128" is on a carpeted floor and the center of the rug keeps humping up but the edges remain in place. It looks like the center is expanding more and more.Should I return it to the store? or what?
This comment is for Darrell, mostly. If you carpet is a pile carpet instead of a loop carpet the rug can become stretched every time you walk on it. If you have furniture on part of the rug this part of the rug stays in place while the rest of the rug moves with every step.
The best thing to do is to have a rug pad made for rug on carpet. There are only a few types that exist, since everyone is going more towards hard flooring.
Not having a good under pad between your rug and carpet causes the rug to bump up, move and warp out of shape.
Plus there is nothing that will stop a rug from moving around on carpet completely, but you can make it stay in place longer.

Thanks for answering my request, Jennab. I'll have to try a rug mat and see if that solves my problem.
